Description
Olympic Gold Game Gear
Olympic Gold for Game Gear is a sports video game developed by Tiertex and published by U.S. Gold for Sega’s Game Gear in 1992. It is the 8-bit version of the game that was also released for the 16-bit Sega Genesis/Mega Drive.
Gameplay and features
- Events: The Game Gear version includes a mix of seven Olympic events that test different skills and button-mashing speed. These events include:
- 100-meter dash
- 110-meter hurdles
- 200-meter freestyle swimming
- Pole vault
- Springboard diving
- Hammer throw
- Archery
- Controls: Most events rely on “frantically pressing buttons” to build speed and power, while events like diving and archery are more strategic.
- Modes: The game offers several ways to play:
- Training Session: Allows players to practice individual events.
- Mini Olympics: Players can select and compete in a subset of the events.
- Full Olympics: Puts competitors through a full, multi-event challenge.
- Olympic Records: Players can try to beat world records and high scores.
- Multiplayer: Up to four players can participate by passing the system around and competing against the computer. However, the lack of simultaneous multiplayer diminishes the competitive energy with friends.
- Presentation: For a Game Gear title, the graphics are noted for being “amazing, with all the sprites well-defined”. Winning a gold medal awards players with a small clip of their competitor’s national anthem.
