Description
Chakan Game Gear
Chakan: The Forever Man is a 1992 action-platformer for the Sega Game Gear and Sega Genesis, based on the comic book of the same name. You play as the cursed immortal swordsman Chakan, who must defeat all manner of evil to find eternal rest. The Game Gear version is known for its intense difficulty but also praised for its high-quality presentation for a portable title.
Gameplay details
- Level structure: The game features a central hub that allows you to choose one of four elemental “planes” (earth, air, fire, and water). Each plane has three stages, for a total of 12 main levels.
- Weapons and magic: Chakan starts with his trademark twin swords but gains new, more powerful weapons in the first stage of each elemental plane. These weapons have secondary uses, such as a grappling hook for climbing or a hammer for breaking walls. You can also collect potions and combine them to create spells with temporary effects, like invincibility or powering up your swords.
- Difficulty: The game is notoriously difficult, with demanding precision platforming and tricky enemy placements. When Chakan dies, he simply returns to the hub world with full health and can retry the level, though he loses any potions he was carrying.
- Double jump: The game features a double jump, which is essential for navigating the challenging platforming sections.
