Batman Returns for the Sega Game Gear is a side-scrolling action-platform game developed by Aspect and published by Sega, loosely following the plot of the 1992 film. It offers a different experience from other versions of the game, with gameplay similar to the Shinobi series on the Game Gear.
Gameplay and Features
The Game Gear version of Batman Returns is an action-oriented platformer featuring a unique branched level system and the ability to adjust Batarang power.
- Batarang Customization: Players can choose between three Batarang attack styles: Long Range (weakest, but safest), Powerful (strongest, shortest-ranged), and Normal (a compromise).
- Special Attacks: Batman can use special attack tokens to call in the Batmobile or Batskiboat (in later levels) to destroy all on-screen enemies.
- Level Design: The game features a non-linear level design with multiple routes in the first four stages. Players can choose between easier and more difficult paths, with the latter often requiring use of the grappling hook to swing across large gaps.
