Description
Chip’s Challenge Atari Lynx
Chip’s Challenge is a top-down, tile-based puzzle video game that was a launch title for the Atari Lynx handheld console in 1989. It was developed by Epyx, with designer Chuck Sommerville creating most of the original levels. While the game later found wider fame through its inclusion in the Microsoft Entertainment Pack 4 for Windows 3.1, the Atari Lynx version is the original.
Gameplay details
- Objective: As the nerdy high schooler Chip, players must navigate through 148 increasingly difficult maze levels to collect a certain number of computer chips.
- Story: The goal is to join the “Bit Busters” computer club and impress Melinda the Mental Marvel.
- Obstacles: Each level presents unique challenges and obstacles to overcome, including:
- Deadly creatures and monsters
- Fire, water, and bomb traps
- Force fields and magnetic pathways
- Invisible walls and teleporters
- Tools: To navigate the puzzles, players must collect and utilize tools such as:
- Keys to open locked doors
- Switches to open and close gates
- Shields for protection from hazards
- Boots for walking on special surfaces
- Game progression:
- Completing a level provides a four-letter password that can be used to skip to that stage from the title screen.
- If a player fails a level repeatedly, the game allows the option to skip it and move on.
- Unlike the Windows version, the Lynx version does not have a battery-backed memory to save the total score.
Special features of the Lynx version
- Secret levels: The Lynx version contains four hidden levels, which can be accessed by finding secret passwords in the main levels.
- Mandelbrot Easter egg: Entering the password “MAND” at the title screen reveals an interactive Mandelbrot set, showcasing the hardware’s graphics capabilities.
- Password system: Because the Lynx did not have an internal save system, players had to use passwords to resume their progress.
