Description

Super Mario Bros NES

Super Mario Bros. is the iconic 1985 platform game developed and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). The first title in the Super Mario series, it helped popularize the side-scrolling platform genre, revive the North American video game industry after the crash of 1983, and established Mario as a worldwide pop culture icon.
Gameplay overview
In Super Mario Bros., players control Mario on his quest to save Princess Toadstool (later known as Princess Peach) from the clutches of King Koopa (Bowser). The game is a side-scrolling adventure through the Mushroom Kingdom, featuring eight worlds with four sub-levels each.
Mechanics
  • Single-player and multiplayer: A second player can join in as Mario’s brother, Luigi, to alternate turns.
  • Goal: The player’s main objective is to navigate each stage and reach the flagpole at the end. The higher you grab the flag, the more points you receive.
  • Power-ups: The game introduced several now-famous power-ups:
    • Super Mushroom: Causes Mario to grow larger, allowing him to smash bricks and take a single extra hit from an enemy.
    • Fire Flower: Changes Mario’s outfit and allows him to throw fireballs at enemies.
    • Starman: Grants temporary invincibility.
  • Enemies: Iconic enemies encountered in the game include the Goombas, Koopa Troopas, and the Hammer Brothers.
  • Secret areas: Players can discover secret areas and “warp pipes” to skip to later worlds.
Legacy and impact
The success and enduring appeal of Super Mario Bros. made it one of the most important and best-selling video games of all time.
  • Genre-defining: It established core elements of the platformer genre, including a clear sense of momentum and gravity that influences how Mario controls.
  • Commercial success: The game sold over 58 million units across all re-releases and was the best-selling game of all time for over two decades.
  • Soundtrack: The game’s memorable and catchy overworld theme, composed by Koji Kondo, has become one of the most recognizable pieces of music in video game history.
