Description
The Terminator Mega Drive
The Mega Drive game The Terminator is a 1992 side-scrolling run-and-gun shooter developed by Probe Software and published by Virgin Games. It is based on the 1984 film of the same name and puts you in the role of Kyle Reese as he attempts to protect Sarah Connor from the Terminator.
Gameplay and mechanics
- Levels: The game consists of four distinct levels based on key scenes from the movie: the future war, the Tech Noir club, the police station, and the factory finale.
- Player character: You play as Kyle Reese, with the simple objective of finding and protecting Sarah Connor.
- Enemies: As you progress, you’ll fight various machines and eventually confront the Terminator at the end of each level. The Terminator himself can teleport and is a challenging boss.
- Weapons: Reese can use a variety of weapons, including grenades and a shotgun.
- Difficulty: The game features four difficulty levels (Easy, Normal, Difficult, and Very Hard), which primarily affect enemy placement and item drop rates.
- Challenge: The Mega Drive version is known for being short and notoriously difficult, with some critics and players citing a lack of extra lives and continues. One death means starting over from the beginning of the game.
Differences from the Mega-CD version
It’s important to distinguish between the Mega Drive version of The Terminator and the Mega-CD release, as they are completely different games.
- Gameplay style: The Mega-CD version is also a run-and-gun side-scrolling game but has more stages and gameplay depth. The Mega Drive version, by contrast, is very short.
- Development: The Mega Drive version is considered to have been rushed, with inconsistent animation quality. This led to the Mega-CD version being considered the more polished and definitive release.
- Content: The Mega-CD version is notable for its use of full-motion video (FMV) cutscenes from the movie and a richer soundtrack.
Another great Mega Drive game – Chiki Chiki Boys (Mega Drive)
