The Chessmaster Game Gear
The Chessmaster is a portable chess game for the Sega Game Gear, released in North America in 1991 and in Europe in 1992. As part of the long-running Chessmaster series, it offers chess instruction and challenges for players of all skill levels.Â
Gameplay features
- Difficulty levels: The game offers 16 different computer difficulty levels, ranging from “Newcomer” to “Grandmaster”.
- Play modes: You can play a match against the computer, set up a two-player match using a “Gear-to-Gear Cable” accessory, or watch the computer play against itself.
- Teaching and hints: A “Teaching Mode” highlights all the possible legal moves for a selected piece. You can also ask the computer for a hint during a match.
- Game analysis: The game allows you to take back and replay moves for a comprehensive analysis of the match.
- Custom board setup: Players can set up custom board positions to solve specific chess problems or practice against a particular scenario.
- Save function: A password system lets you save your game and continue playing later.Â
