Description

NHLPA Hockey ’93 Mega Drive

NHLPA Hockey ’93 is a 1992 ice hockey video game developed by Park Place Productions and published by Electronic Arts for the Sega Mega Drive (Genesis). It is the second game in the EA Sports NHL series and is known for its fast-paced action and inclusion of licensed NHLPA players, though it lacks the official NHL branding.
Key features
  • Licensed NHLPA players: Although the game does not have official NHL team names or logos, it features over 500 real players from the 1991-92 NHL season, such as Luc Robitaille, Chris Chelios, Mark Recchi, and Joe Mullen. Teams are referred to by city names only, such as “Toronto” or “Washington”.
  • Player injuries and fighting: A new feature for the time was the inclusion of player injuries, as well as the ability to fight. The fighting feature led to the game not receiving a full NHL license, as the league was not pleased with its inclusion.
  • Improved goalie AI: Compared to its predecessor, NHLPA Hockey ’93 features smarter and faster goalies who can dive, lunge, and “stick hard”.
  • Gameplay modes: The game offers an exhibition mode for a quick single game and a playoff mode, which can be either single-elimination or a best-of-seven series.
  • EEPROM save functionality: The Mega Drive (Genesis) version of the game included EEPROM saving, allowing players to save ongoing playoff progress and customised team lineups directly to the cartridge.

Another great retro game available at Escapist Gamer – Chiki Chiki Boys (Mega Drive)
