Description

Comic Zone Mega Drive

Comix Zone is a classic beat ’em up game developed by Sega Technical Institute and released for the Sega Mega Drive in 1995. The game is famous for its unique visual style, which brings the action to life within the panels of a comic book.
Plot and concept
The game’s narrative begins with Sketch Turner, a “grunge-era” comic book artist, working during a thunderstorm. A bolt of lightning strikes his comic book, allowing the main villain, a powerful mutant named Mortus, to escape into the real world. Mortus traps Sketch inside the comic’s pages and begins drawing enemies to kill him.
Trapped in a world of his own creation, Sketch must fight through the pages to defeat Mortus and escape back to reality. Along the way, he is guided by General Alissa Cyan, a resistance fighter in the comic’s post-apocalyptic setting.
Gameplay mechanics
Comix Zone is a unique blend of beat ’em up and puzzle-solving action.
  • Panel progression: Sketch moves from one comic book panel to the next by defeating enemies, solving puzzles, or breaking through panel borders.
  • Health as a resource: Sketch’s health decreases when he is hit by enemies or when he uses certain abilities, such as tearing the comic page to create a paper airplane or punching a destructible object.
  • Sidekick companion: Roadkill, Sketch’s pet rat, can access small spaces to flip switches, discover hidden items, or shock enemies.
  • Item management: Sketch can carry and use a limited number of items, including knives, bombs, and iced tea, which restores his health.
  • Multiple endings: The final battle with Mortus determines the game’s outcome. If Sketch is too slow in defeating the final boss and saving Alissa, he will get a less favourable ending.
Critical reception and legacy
Upon its release, Comix Zone received praise for its stunning art style, animations, and original concept, which immerses the player in the comic book medium. However, it was also criticized for its high difficulty, short length, and repetitive combat.
The game has since earned a cult following and has been re-released on numerous compilation packages and digital storefronts. Despite its mixed reception at the time, its innovative presentation has made it a memorable title for the Mega Drive.
