The Dark Pictures Anthology Man of Medan review Xbox One
The Dark Pictures Anthology Man of Medan Xbox One is an interactive horror adventure from the creators of Until Dawn. While it lacks the polish of its predecessor, its branching narrative and excellent multiplayer modes offer a tense and repayable experience, especially when playing with friends.
Synopsis
Based on the legend of the SS Ourang Medan, the game follows five friends on a diving trip in the South Pacific. When a storm hits, they become trapped aboard a dilapidated ghost ship and must confront supernatural forces and their deepest fears. All five of the playable characters can either live or die, with their ultimate fates determined by your choices.
Pros
- Strong co-op features: The game was explicitly designed with multiplayer in mind, offering a compelling online “Shared Story” mode and a five-player offline “Movie Night” mode. Online co-op is especially notable for giving players different simultaneous scenes and perspectives, adding stress and replayability.
- Atmospheric and visually impressive: The game creates a brilliantly creepy and unsettling atmosphere aboard the abandoned WWII freighter. For the most part, the graphics and facial animations are stunning, with a detailed and realistic visual style.
- High replayability: The branching narrative, combined with numerous choices and multiple endings, encourages repeat playthroughs to explore different story paths and outcomes. A post-release “Curator’s Cut” adds further incentive by offering new scenes and perspectives.
- Engaging psychological horror: The story provides genuinely tense moments and well-timed jump scares. It plays on psychological elements, keeping players on edge throughout the main narrative.
Cons
- Weak cast and slow pacing: The characterizations are not as strong as in Until Dawn, and the cast is generally less memorable. The story has a notably slow build-up before the action begins, which can feel stagnant.
- Technical performance issues on base hardware: Upon release, many Xbox One players reported significant technical problems, including frustrating screen tearing, stuttering, and dropped frames during critical quick-time events (QTEs). For some, these issues could even cause an unavoidable character death. While later patches and an Xbox Series X|S upgrade may have addressed these, the original Xbox One performance was a notable drawback.
- Can be predictable: Some critics found the central mystery and plot twists to be predictable, especially for those familiar with Supermassive Games’ previous work.
- Sloppy controls: Character movement can feel stiff, and navigating the environments can be clumsy. This, combined with QTE sensitivity, could occasionally lead to frustrating gameplay moments.
Verdict
Man of Medan is a fun and worthwhile interactive horror game, but its quality depends heavily on your expectations and who you play it with. Its innovative multiplayer modes are a standout feature that elevates the experience, making it a fantastic title for a “Movie Night” with friends. However, solo players or fans expecting the same high standard of character and plot from Until Dawn may find it a bit underwhelming.
For owners of a launch-era Xbox One, the technical performance issues present at release are an important consideration, though these have since been mitigated by updates. If you’re a fan of narrative-driven horror and can appreciate a cinematic, B-movie style, Man of Medan is a solid, replayable start to The Dark Pictures Anthology.
