Star Wars – Episode 4 – A New Hope DVD
DVD releases of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope have been met with mixed reviews due to significant alterations made to the film by George Lucas in various “Special Editions”. While the original 1977 film is praised as a timeless classic, many fans and critics are divided over the updated special effects and scene changes in the home video releases.
The key issue for many collectors is tracking down a specific version of the film, as Lucas has repeatedly altered the original movie, adding CGI elements and changing scenes and dialogue.
The 2004 DVD release
This was the first wide DVD release of A New Hope and is based on the 1997 Special Edition with further changes.
- Picture and sound: This version features remastered picture quality and an enhanced sound mix.
- Altered content: It includes many of the controversial CGI additions, such as the smoother-looking landspeeder effects, the expanded Mos Eisley shots, and the improved CGI for Jabba the Hutt.
- “Han shot first”: In this version, the famous Cantina scene was again altered so that Han and Greedo shoot almost simultaneously, a change that infuriated many fans.
