Sony MiniDisc 1gb HI-MD

The Sony 1GB HI-MD MiniDisc (HMD1G) is a discontinued, high-capacity magneto-optical disc for use with Sony’s Hi-MD players and recorders. While no longer manufactured, the discs can still be purchased from secondhand and new old stock markets. 
Overview and features
Introduced in 2004, the 1GB Hi-MD discs increased the capacity of the MiniDisc format, offering significantly longer recording times and the ability to store data files. Key features include: 
  • High-capacity storage: 1GB of storage space allows for up to 45 hours of music recording using ATRAC3plus compression technology.
  • High-quality audio recording: Supports uncompressed linear PCM audio recording, offering a truly lossless, CD-quality audio experience.
  • Versatile recording modes: In addition to PCM, it also supports Hi-SP and Hi-LP compression modes. Hi-SP offers very good quality, while Hi-LP maximizes recording time at a lower fidelity.
  • Data storage: The disc can also be used as a general-purpose storage medium for computer files like Word, Excel, and MP3s.
  • Physical durability: The magneto-optical disc is sealed within a plastic cartridge, making it more resistant to scratches and damage than CDs.
  • Device compatibility: The discs are compatible only with MiniDisc players and recorders that specifically feature the “Hi-MD” logo.
