Description
The Sony MZ-R91 is a highly compact, premium portable MiniDisc recorder and player launched by Sony in October 1999. Released alongside its sibling, the magnesium-framed MZ-R90, the MZ-R91 was celebrated for its stylish, colourful aluminium finishes and ultra-compact “jacket size” footprint.

- Pre-MDLP Era: Built before the implementation of MiniDisc Long Play, meaning it strictly records and plays in standard SP (Stereo) and Mono modes. It cannot read or playback LP2/LP4 formats.
- Ultra-Compact Shell: Features a premium brushed aluminium body weighing only 110g (body only). At release, it was among the smallest portable recorders ever made.
- Power Architecture: Runs internally on a flat rechargeable gumstick battery (NH-14WM). It includes a side-attaching plastic caddy to expand power using a single standard AA battery. Combined, they offer up to 29 hours of playback.
- Anti-Skip Protection: Equipped with a 40-second anti-shock memory buffer to prevent audio stuttering on the go.
- Advanced Features: Includes useful physical recording controls, an auto-track marking system, a standard 3.5mm headphone line out, and a dedicated optical/line-in port for digital transfers.
