Description
Shining And The Darkness Mega Drive
Shining in the Darkness (known as Shining and the Darkness in Japan) is a 1991 role-playing video game for the Sega Mega Drive. Developed by Climax Entertainment, it was the first entry in the long-running Shining series, though its gameplay is different from the more famous tactical RPGs that followed, such as Shining Force.
Gameplay
- Dungeon crawler: The game is a first-person dungeon crawler, similar to earlier RPGs like Wizardry.
- 3D exploration: Players explore a 3D dungeon maze from a first-person perspective, moving across a grid.
- Turn-based combat: Combat occurs via random monster encounters and is presented in a turn-based format, with the action viewed from the hero’s perspective.
- Icon-based menu: The game was an innovator for its time with its use of an icon-based menu system for combat and other interactions.
- Grinding: Like many early RPGs, the gameplay is noted for its need for the player to grind for experience and gold to proceed.
Story
- The setting: The story takes place in the Kingdom of Thornwood.
- The hero’s quest: The player assumes the role of a young warrior tasked by the king to enter the dangerous Labyrinth.
- The objective: The goals are to find the powerful Arms of Light, rescue the king’s daughter and the hero’s missing father, and stop the evil sorcerer Dark Sol.
- Multiple paths: The game offers some replay ability and story changes based on whether the player rescues certain characters found within the dungeon.
Legacy and re-releases
- A founding title: Shining in the Darkness launched the popular Shining franchise. While its direct sequel was the tactical RPG Shining Force, many elements like the art style, music, and distinct menu system were carried over.
- Available on modern hardware: The game has been released on many compilation discs and virtual console platforms. These include:
-
Wii Virtual Console
(2007)
- Sonic’s Ultimate Genesis Collection for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 (2009)
- Sega Mega Drive and Genesis Classics for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch (2018)
