Description
Pele’s Soccer Atari 2600
Pele’s Soccer is a sports video game released in 1981 for the Atari 2600. The game, originally released as Championship Soccer, was endorsed by and featured the name of the famous Brazilian footballer, Pelé. It is known for its relatively simple, yet challenging, arcade-style soccer gameplay and was re-released in 1986 as a budget title by Atari Corp..
Gameplay
- Team and Control: Players each control a team of three blocky figures, and the goal is to kick the ball into the opponent’s net to score. You can pass to other players and can control the goalie when the ball is near the net.
- Modes and Difficulty: The game offers one- or two-player modes and includes different difficulty settings that affect the goal size and game speed.
- Features: Gameplay includes a referee, cutscenes with fireworks when a goal is scored, and a slight slowing effect on players during a breakaway to allow for defensive plays.
- Reception: While sometimes described as clunky, it was considered a decent and fun sports game for the era, especially when played with another person.
Another great retro game available at Escapist Gamer – Video Pinball (Atari 2600)
