Description

Lemmings Mega Drive

Released for the Mega Drive in 1992, Lemmings is a puzzle-strategy game developed by DMA Design and published by Sunsoft in North America and Sega in Europe. The Mega Drive version is notable for having the most levels of any release of the original Lemmings.
Gameplay and mechanics
As with other versions of Lemmings, you must guide a group of anthropomorphic lemmings through a series of increasingly difficult levels to a designated exit. The lemmings walk continuously in one direction and must be assigned specific skills to overcome obstacles.
Available skills include:
  • Climber: Enables a lemming to climb vertical walls.
  • Floater: Allows a lemming to safely parachute down from high falls.
  • Bomber: Turns a lemming into a bomb, causing it to explode after a short countdown.
  • Blocker: Stops all other lemmings from passing by forming a barrier.
  • Builder: Builds a staircase, allowing lemmings to cross gaps or climb to higher ledges.
  • Basher: Digs a horizontal tunnel through scenery.
  • Miner: Digs a downward-sloping tunnel.
  • Digger: Digs a vertical tunnel straight down.
Unique features of the Mega Drive version
  • More levels: The Mega Drive port has the highest level count of any version of the original game, with 180 levels in total. This includes the standard four difficulty settings, plus two extra categories: “Present” and “SUNSOFT”.
  • Two-player mode: A competitive, 20-level multiplayer mode is included, with a vertical split-screen display. Each player controls a different colour of lemmings and must guide them to their respective exit before their opponent. You can also send enemy lemmings to your opponent’s exit to score points.
  • Unique and remixed levels: Many of the later levels in this version are unique to the Mega Drive, while others are redesigned versions of levels from the expansion pack Oh No! More Lemmings.
  • No mouse support: Unlike some computer versions, the Mega Drive version does not support a mouse, requiring you to use a standard controller.
