Description
Hybrid Heaven N64
Hybrid Heaven, released in 1999 for the Nintendo 64, is a sci-fi action role-playing game (RPG) developed and published by Konami. It is known for its unique blend of real-time movement and turn-based combat mechanics.
Gameplay
- Real-time movement: Outside of battle, the game plays like a third-person action-adventure title. You explore a large underground facility, solve puzzles, and shoot at robotic security drones with a non-lethal “defuser gun”. The controls for this exploration are often criticized as clunky and the environments as repetitive.
- Unique combat system: When you encounter an organic enemy, the game transitions into a one-on-one combat mode.
- Players can freely move and position themselves around the opponent in real-time. As you move, a stamina bar charges up.
- Once you have enough stamina, you can pause the action to select from a menu of attacks, similar to a turn-based RPG. You can choose from various punches, kicks, and grappling moves, and even link them into combos.
- You can also level up individual body parts. For example, using a particular kick frequently will improve your leg’s attack power, while being hit in the head will increase that body part’s defence.
- Multiplayer mode: The game includes a “Vs. Battle Mode,” where you can bring your levelled-up character to challenge another player.
Plot
- The game’s story centres around a bodyguard named Johnny Slater who is cloned by a secret society of hybrid aliens.
- While investigating a murder, Johnny is led into an extensive subterranean facility where these hybrids are conducting genetic experiments with the intent to replace human society with clones.
- The plot involves alien conspiracies, clones, and genetic mutations, which some players find intriguing while others consider it disjointed and convoluted due to poor translation.
Technical features
- Expansion Pak support: Hybrid Heaven supports the N64’s Expansion Pak, which enables an optional high-resolution mode. However, this feature significantly degrades the game’s frame rate and is generally not recommended for regular gameplay.
- Rumble Pak support: The game is compatible with the Rumble Pak, allowing for vibration feedback.
- Controller Pak required: To save your game, you need an N64 Controller Pak, as the game’s Japanese version featured a built-in EEPROM that was not included in Western releases.
