Gauntlet The Deeper Dungeons C64
Gauntlet: The Deeper Dungeons for the Commodore 64 is an official expansion pack that adds 512 new levels to the original Gauntlet game. Developed by Gremlin Graphics and published in 1987 by U.S. Gold, it requires the original game to be loaded first.
Gameplay features
The expansion retains the top-down dungeon-crawler action of the original but makes the experience harder and more intense.
- More enemies: The game features significantly more monsters to fight on every level.
- Harder levels: The game presents blue flashing traps from the very start, which remove barriers holding back waves of enemies. There are also more “Death” enemies to encounter.
- Balance changes: To offset the increased difficulty, items like invisibility amulets and healing potions are more common. However, the dangerous poisoned cider also appears more frequently.
- Inventory limit: The game adds a limit on the number of items a player can carry, forcing players to manage their inventory of keys and potions.
- Two-player co-op: As with the original, the game supports two-player cooperative play, which many reviewers note as the best way to enjoy the game’s chaos.
Background and level design
The 512 new levels were sourced from a competition held in Europe, where players submitted their own dungeon designs. The winners received prizes, including a copy of the program. The levels are presented randomly to the player, offering a new layout with every playthrough.
C64 port characteristics
The Commodore 64 version maintains the look and feel of the original computer port, though some critics found the graphics small and the sound lacking compared to the arcade version’s voice samples. Despite these drawbacks, the gameplay is generally well-regarded and highly addictive. The title screen features a unique pixel art image of the four heroes, which replaced the arcade’s cabinet artwork.
