• The Sega Game Gear is not region-locked, which means you can play a Japanese game cartridge on a non-Japanese system without any modifications. The Japanese version is the same game as the international versions, so it is a functional and playable collectible. 
  Differences from the Master System version
  It is worth noting that the Game Gear port of The Lucky Dime Caper is a stripped-down version of the game compared to the Sega Master System release, even though they share the same name. The Game Gear version has some key differences: 
  • Gameplay: Key platforming elements from the Master System version, such as swinging vines and auto-scrolling stages, are missing from the Game Gear version.
  • Weapons: On the Game Gear, you keep your weapon (hammer or frisbee) even after taking damage, making the game significantly easier than the Master System version where you lose it.
  • Level design: The handheld’s smaller screen and other technical constraints meant that some of the more complex boss fights and level designs from the Master System had to be altered or cut entirely.
