Description

Bump Set Spike C64

Bump Set Spike! is a volleyball game released for the Commodore 64 in 1986 by Mastertronic and developed by Superior Quality Software. It was one of the early releases for the budget label Entertainment USA.

Gameplay and features
Gameplay modes: Players can choose between indoor and beach volleyball courts, and select from several options for one- or two-player games. You can play against the computer, cooperatively with a friend against the computer, or competitively against a friend.

Difficulty: The game includes nine difficulty levels, a combination of three speeds and three difficulties. The computer is noted for being a tough opponent, especially in one-player mode.

Controls: The game is played with a joystick in Port 2. To serve, a player holds the fire button to move a crosshair that determines where the ball will land.

Graphics and sound: The graphics are considered average for the time, but the game is notable for its excellent soundtrack composed by Rob Hubbard, with a different track for each court.

Two-player mode: The game is generally viewed as being more enjoyable and balanced when played in competitive two-player mode.

Reception and legacy
Upon release, Commodore User magazine gave the game a 7/10 rating.
Many reviewers, both at the time and in retrospective looks, have praised Rob Hubbard’s soundtrack but found the single-player gameplay difficult and sometimes tedious due to the challenging computer opponent.

A version of the game was later released for the ZX Spectrum and Amstrad CPC.
