Description
Ax Battler Game Gear
x Battler: A Legend of Golden Axe is a 1991 action-adventure game developed by Aspect and published by Sega for the Game Gear. A spin-off of the classic Golden Axe series, it differs from the arcade beat-’em-up style by incorporating top-down RPG elements, side-scrolling action, and one-on-one combat.
Gameplay overview
The game puts you in the role of Ax Battler, the barbarian hero from the original series, on a quest to reclaim the Golden Axe from the villainous Death Adder.
- RPG mechanics: You navigate a world map, visiting towns to advance the plot. There is no traditional leveling system with experience points. Instead, you unlock new abilities and special moves by visiting “training halls” and defeating a specific enemy.
- Combat:
- Overworld: On the world map, you will encounter random one-on-one battles. If Ax Battler wins, you receive “magic vases” that are used for magic attacks or as currency at inns.
- Dungeons: The “Special Landmarks” like caves and towers feature side-scrolling platforming sections filled with enemies and traps.
- Magic: Your magic attacks are executed by using the magic vases you collect.
- Healing: Healing is primarily done by resting at inns in towns, which costs you magic vases.
- Reputation: Reviewers note that the game’s combat system is often unforgiving and the overworld battles can be frequent and tedious.
Reviews and retrospective
Ax Battler has a mixed to negative reputation among fans and critics, with many feeling it did not live up to the promise of the Golden Axe brand.
- Pros:
- Visuals and sound: The graphics are considered decent for the Game Gear, with recognizable character sprites and a fitting, if repetitive, soundtrack.
- Ambitious concept: Some reviewers noted the ambition in trying to fuse different genres and expand the lore of the Golden Axe series.
- Cons:
- Grinding: The gameplay is often criticized for being overly reliant on grinding for magic vases.
- Frustrating difficulty: The one-hit-KO system in overworld battles and awkward platforming controls in dungeons make the game a test of patience.
- Unfulfilling ending: The game lacks a final boss fight. The confrontation with Death Adder is resolved through a text-based cutscene, which many found to be unsatisfying.
