Description
Alien 3 Amiga
Alien 3 for the Commodore Amiga is a 1992 run-and-gun action platformer based on the film of the same name. Unlike the movie, where Ellen Ripley has no weapons, the Amiga version gives her an arsenal to fight off numerous aliens infesting the prison colony of Fiorina 161.
Gameplay and mechanics
- Action platforming: The game consists of 14 side-scrolling, maze-like levels where you control Ripley. You must navigate through the prison, using terminals to receive mission objectives.
- Mission objectives: Tasks vary, and include rescuing trapped prisoners, destroying alien eggs, repairing equipment, and sealing doors.
- Time limit: Each level is subject to a time limit. If you fail to complete your objectives before the timer runs out, you lose a life.
- Weaponry: Ripley is equipped with a motion tracker and several weapons, such as a pulse rifle, flamethrower, and grenade launcher. You can switch between weapons, but your ammunition is limited.
- Final battle: The game concludes with a confrontation against the Alien Queen.
Comparison with other versions
- Graphics and atmosphere: The Amiga version is nearly identical to the Sega Genesis version, though some reviewers noted that the Amiga port’s gameplay moves slightly slower. The graphics were praised for creating a dark, intense atmosphere, with well-animated character sprites.
- Sound: You can only play with either music or sound effects at a time, not both. The music was considered atmospheric, while the sound effects were generally seen as decent but somewhat generic.
- SNES version: The Super Nintendo version of Alien 3 is a completely different game, with unique graphics, level designs, and only six stages.
Reception
- Positive aspects: The game was generally well-received by critics, who praised its atmospheric graphics and sound. Many considered it a solid, action-packed title that was a rare example of a good film-to-game adaptation.
- Negative aspects: Some common criticisms included the frustrating difficulty, repetitive objectives, and some slightly awkward controls. The inability to have both music and sound effects playing at once was also a notable drawback.
Another great retro game available at Escapist Gamer – Desert Strike (Amiga)
