Star Wars – The Force Awakens Blu-ray
The Blu-ray release of J.J. Abrams’ Star Wars: The Force Awakens was widely praised for its exceptional picture and sound quality, as well as a comprehensive package of bonus features. Critics noted that the transfer is stunning and reference-quality, making it a great demo disc for home theatre enthusiasts.
However, initial releases were subject to “double dipping” controversies, with a more complete Collector’s Edition released later that included more features, including a 3D version.
Picture quality
Reviewers found the Blu-ray’s image, shot on 35mm film, to be magnificent.
  • 1080p Blu-ray: Provides a clean, film-like quality with a fine sheen of grain, retaining excellent detail and vibrant colours.
  • 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray: The native 4K image is stunning, with crisp detail, strong colours, and deep black levels. It provides extra visual punch thanks to HDR and Wide Colour Gamut.
  • 3D Blu-ray: The stereoscopic version was also highly regarded, creating a convincing sense of depth and making for a very immersive viewing experience.
Sound quality
Both the standard and 4K releases feature highly immersive sound, immersing the viewer in the action.
  • Standard Blu-ray

: Features a DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 track that is dynamic and active across all channels, with a deep bass response.

  • 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray

: The included Dolby Atmos soundtrack is considered an improvement over the previous Blu-ray audio, with pinpoint-accurate effects and powerful, deep bass.

  • Sound Mix

: The film’s audio features a great mix of dynamic effects and John Williams’ soaring score, with dialogue remaining clear and prioritized.

Special features
The special features package, especially on the Collector’s Edition, is generally praised as extensive, although some reviewers noted that the documentaries could have been longer.
  • Secrets of The Force Awakens: A Cinematic Journey: A feature-length documentary covering the production of the film, with insights from cast and crew.
  • Making-of featurettes: A series of featurettes cover specific aspects of the movie’s production, including:
    • Creature effects
    • The creation of the droid BB-8
    • The climactic lightsaber battle in the snow
    • The digital effects work of Industrial Light & Magic (ILM)
    • John Williams’ score
  • Deleted Scenes: A selection of minor deleted scenes is included.
  • Audio commentary: An audio commentary track by director J.J. Abrams is available on the Collector’s Edition.
  • Double-dipping criticism: Some fans and critics were disappointed that Disney released a bare-bones Blu-ray initially, later following up with the Collector’s Edition.
Overall takeaway
Most reviews conclude that the The Force Awakens Blu-ray is a top-tier release in terms of audio-visual presentation. The story itself received a more mixed response, with some enjoying the faithful-yet-familiar story, and others criticizing it for being too much of a rehash of A New Hope. For fans of the movie, the Blu-ray—particularly the Collector’s Edition or 4K UHD release—is widely recommended.
