Description
Action Biker C64
Action Biker, also known as KP Skips Action Biker with Clumsy Colin, is a 1985 game for the Commodore 64 and other platforms, published by Mastertronic. The game is a promotional tie-in with KP Skips, a UK snack food, whose mascot was the character “Clumsy Colin”.
Gameplay
- Objective: The player controls Clumsy Colin on a motorbike, navigating an open-world town to find and collect 40 pieces of equipment. After all parts are collected, the player must complete a final drag race.
- Perspective: The C64 version uses an isometric (faux-3D) view that wraps around at the edges of the map.
- Upgrades: Certain equipment pieces enhance the motorbike’s abilities. These include a new gearbox for better acceleration, water-skis for crossing water, and a larger fuel tank.
- Fuel and Lives: The player has a limited amount of fuel and several lives. Fuel can be replenished at a petrol station. Crashing into obstacles or running out of fuel costs a life.
- World: The game features several distinct areas, including a petrol station, a lake, a rollercoaster, and a building site.
Development and reception
- Sound: The game features music composed by the legendary C64 musician Rob Hubbard.
- Platform differences: The ZX Spectrum version of Action Biker was a completely different game from the C64 and Atari 8-bit versions, featuring a top-down view and a different plot.
- Legacy: Despite its simple premise, the game is remembered for its fun, free-roaming design, decent graphics for the time, and catchy music. It was reviewed favourably in its day, including an 83% rating in Zzap! 64 magazine.
