Half Life Collection – Free to play @ Steam

As of October 2025, the Half-Life collection is not free to play or own on Steam. The franchise was temporarily available for free on two separate occasions in recent years, but both promotions have ended. 

Half-Life promotions that have ended

• February to March 2020: In the lead-up to the release of Half-Life: Alyx, Valve made the entire Half-Life catalog free to play for a limited time.
• November 2024: To celebrate Half-Life 2‘s 20th anniversary, Valve offered the game for free for a few days, along with its episodes. This was a “keep it forever” promotion, but the claim window has now closed. 

How to get Half-Life games now

While the recent free offers have expired, the Half-Life series frequently goes on sale on Steam, and it’s generally very inexpensive.

• Wishlist the games: Add the games to your Steam wishlist to receive an email notification when they are discounted.
• Purchase during a Steam Sale: Major events like the Steam Winter or Summer sales are reliable times to find the Half-Life collection and other Valve titles for a very low price.
