Description
Golden Axe C64
Golden Axe for the Commodore 64 (C64) is a 1990 home conversion of Sega’s legendary 1989 arcade beat ’em up. Developed by Probe Software and published by Virgin Mastertronic
Key Differences & Cutbacks
While the port tries to retain the high-fantasy atmosphere of Yuria, significant compromises were made to fit the game into the C64’s memory:
- No Multiplayer: The iconic 2-player co-op mode was cut entirely; it is strictly a 1-player game.
- 1-on-1 Combat: Due to sprite flickering issues, the engine can only handle one enemy on screen at a time engaging the player.
- Missing Features: The variety of rideable “Bizarrian” creatures was reduced to just two types of dragons. Some budget or magazine versions were even missing entire levels.
- Cancelled Prototypes: Developers originally attempted a more accurate “V1” version featuring 2-player gameplay and multiple simultaneous enemies, but it was scrapped due to severe technical issues
