Description

Lotus Turbo Challenge Mega Drive

Lotus Turbo Challenge is an arcade-style racing game for the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, released in 1992. Though it shares its name with the first game in the series, the Genesis version is actually a port of the Amiga’s Lotus Turbo Challenge 2.
Gameplay features
  • Arcade-style racing: The game focuses on time trials, challenging the player to beat a strict clock by reaching a series of checkpoints before time runs out.
  • Two-player mode: A split-screen mode allows two players to race head-to-head. An on-screen bar displays the relative position of the two cars.
  • Realistic Lotus cars: The game is endorsed by the British car manufacturer Lotus and features two of its models. The car you drive is automatically selected based on the track.
    • Lotus Elan: Used on odd-numbered tracks.
    • Lotus Esprit Turbo: Used on even-numbered tracks.
  • Diverse stages: You race through eight distinct stages, with over 60 checkpoints, across varying weather and terrain conditions. Levels include forest, night, fog, snow, and rain.
  • Obstacles and hazards: Tracks are littered with hazards like water puddles, oil slicks, and boulders that slow you down, adding to the game’s high difficulty.
  • Password system: The game includes a password system that allows players to continue their progress from later levels.
Differences from the original Amiga version
The Genesis version is known as an inferior, though still fun, port of the Amiga’s Lotus Turbo Challenge 2.
  • Graphics and performance: Compared to the Amiga version, the Genesis port has a lower frame rate, reduced colour palette, and less impressive graphical effects. This results in a reduced sensation of speed.
  • Sound: The Genesis version features scratchy voice clips and has music only in the menus, not during the actual race.
  • Higher difficulty: The strict checkpoint timers were perceived as more punishing in the Genesis port, making it a very challenging game.
  • Track layout differences: For the US release, the track direction was reversed to align with right-hand driving. However, the traffic patterns were not adjusted, leading to some confusing and difficult situations.
