Description
Wizards Warriors ZX Spectrum
There were two different ZX Spectrum games titled Wizards Warrior or The Wizard’s Warriors released in the 1980s by different publishers. Both were unofficial conversions based on the 1983 arcade game Wizard of Wor.
Mastertronic version: The Wizards Warriors (1983)
This is an arcade-style maze shooter game for the ZX Spectrum 48K and 128K.
- Gameplay: As a wizard, you must navigate a series of crypts and shoot at the minions of the tyrannical Wizard of Wylye.
- Enemies: The levels are infested with enemies, who can have unexpected powers. After clearing each crypt of its inhabitants, the Wizard’s Magic Eagle appears as a boss.
- Weapons: Your only weapon is a laser rifle.
- Differences from arcade original: It is an unofficial conversion of Wizard of Wor. It is considered more difficult and has less impressive graphics and sound than the original arcade game and other home computer versions, such as the Commodore 64 port.
Crusader Computing version: Wizard’s Warrior (1987)
A later release, this is a text and illustrated adventure game for the ZX Spectrum 48K.
- Developer: Dave Hawkins.
- Engine: The game was authored using the Professional Adventure Writer tool.
- Gameplay: Unlike the Mastertronic version, this game focuses on puzzle-solving and exploration through text-based commands rather than action.
Distinguishing the two games
It is easy to confuse the two versions because of their similar names. The key differences are their publisher, genre, and release year:
- Mastertronic’s The Wizards Warriors (1983): Arcade maze shooter.
- Crusader Computing’s Wizard’s Warrior (1987): Text-based illustrated adventure.
