Xenophobe Atari Lynx
Xenophobe is a 1990 action game for the Atari Lynx, based on the 1987 arcade classic from Bally Midway. It is considered one of the best ports of the original game, thanks to its faithful gameplay and expanded multiplayer features.
Gameplay
Players take on the role of “Xeno exterminators” and must clear multiple floors of alien-infested space stations, starbases, and ships within a time limit.
Key gameplay features:
- Aliens: You battle several types of aliens, from smaller “Critters” that latch onto your character to larger “Rollerbabies” and “Snotterpillars”.
- Exploration: The levels are designed with multiple floors connected by elevators, and players explore different rooms to find weapons, grenades, and health restoratives.
- Objectives: To complete a level, you must defeat a certain number of aliens or wipe out the entire infestation. Bonus points are awarded for a complete sweep.
- Strategic elements: Later levels require careful exploration and resource management. If the timer runs out, the station becomes overrun and your mission fails.
Atari Lynx port features
The Lynx version is highly regarded for its special features that improved upon the arcade version.
- Multiplayer: Using the Lynx’s ComLynx cable, up to four players can team up in a cooperative multiplayer mode.
