The Lucky Dime Caper Donald Duck Game Gear

The Lucky Dime Caper is a 1991 platformer for the Sega Game Gear and Master System, starring Donald Duck. Developed and published by Sega, the Game Gear version of the game differs significantly from its Master System counterpart. 
Gameplay and plot
The game’s plot sees Donald Duck embark on a quest to rescue his nephews, Huey, Dewey, and Louie, after they are kidnapped by the evil witch Magica De Spell, who has also stolen Scrooge McDuck’s Number One Dime. 
The gameplay is similar to other Disney platformers of the time, such as Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse. Key features include: 
  • Donald can defeat enemies by either jumping on them or using one of two weapons.
  • The primary weapon is a hammer for close-range combat, while a frisbee allows for long-distance attacks.
  • On the Game Gear version, if Donald is hit once, he loses his equipped weapon. If he is hit again without a weapon, he loses a life.
  • Some reviewers found the Game Gear version to have sluggish jumping physics and blander level design compared to the Master System version. 
Game Gear vs. Master System version
The two versions of The Lucky Dime Caper feature key differences in level design, mechanics, and difficulty: 
  • Removed features: The Game Gear port removes several features found in the Master System version, including swinging vines and an auto-scrolling segment where Donald runs down a hill.
  • Simplified boss battles: Boss encounters were also simplified in the Game Gear port.
  • Permanent power-ups: On the Game Gear, if Donald has the frisbee and is hit, he will lose it. However, after picking it up again, he will respawn with it even if he dies. This is different from the Master System version where a single hit makes you lose your weapon.
