Description

Spiderman 2 Game Boy Advance

Released in 2004, the Game Boy Advance (GBA) version of Spider-Man 2 is a 2D side-scrolling action game developed by Digital Eclipse and published by Activision. Unlike the open-world 3D experience of its console counterpart, this handheld title features a mix of standard side-scrolling stages and unique 3D overworld sections.
Gameplay features
  • 2D side-scrolling levels: Most of the game’s stages feature traditional side-scrolling combat where you fight enemies and bosses, with some levels requiring you to complete objectives like disarming bombs. Some levels include unique mechanics, such as Mysterio’s psychedelic stage which has bumpers that bounce Spidey around.
  • 3D overworld: In an impressive feature for the GBA, certain sections of the game drop you into a 3D version of New York City. In these sequences, you can run, climb, and web-swing between buildings to navigate to your next mission point.
  • Boss battles: The game includes boss fights against iconic villains from the comics, including Mysterio, Hobgoblin, and Rhino, leading up to a final confrontation with Doctor Octopus.
  • Progression and upgrades: An experience system allows you to earn points to purchase power-ups and combos between levels, with options to increase health, damage, and movement speed.
  • Unlockables: Completing the game and achieving specific objectives can unlock extra content like an image gallery of movie stills.
Player reception
  • Mixed reviews: The GBA version of Spider-Man 2 received mixed reviews upon its release, in contrast to the critical acclaim of the console versions. Reviewers appreciated the fluid 2D animation and the ambition of including 3D elements, but criticized the repetitive combat, wonky controls, and sometimes frustrating level design.
  • Choppy 3D segments: The 3D overworld sections, while impressive from a technical standpoint, were noted for their choppy animation and slow performance, making them feel more like a tech demo than a fully realized gameplay feature.
  • Short playtime: Some reviewers mentioned that the game is quite short, especially when compared to the expansive experience of the home console versions.

Another great retro game available at Escapist Gamer – Barbie and the Magic Pegasus (Game Boy Advance)
