Description

Space Harrier Master System

Space Harrier is a classic 1986 arcade shoot ’em up that was ported to the Sega Master System shortly after its original release. While widely considered inferior to the arcade version due to technical limitations, the Master System port is still regarded as a solid and impressive game for its hardware.
Gameplay
In Space Harrier, you control a flying, laser-wielding character through a series of colourful, surreal stages in the “Fantasy Zone”. The gameplay involves:
  • On-rails shooting: The game follows a fixed, forward-scrolling path, with your character zipping and dodging in the foreground.
  • Fighting imaginative enemies: You will battle a variety of enemies and end-of-level bosses, including one-eyed mammoths, flying mushrooms, and futuristic robots.
  • Bonus stages: In between some stages, you will ride a friendly dragon named Uriah and earn bonus points by destroying objects in the environment.
  • Different final boss: The Master System version adds a unique final boss not found in the original arcade game.
How it compares to the arcade version
As a port for 8-bit hardware, the Master System version had to make compromises compared to the more powerful arcade original.
  • Graphics: The Master System uses pre-drawn graphics instead of real-time sprite scaling. This causes a “choppy” effect when objects move closer or further away from the player. Enemies are also rendered as background tiles, which can make them look blocky, especially bosses, since multiple sprites cannot be layered on top of each other.
  • Controls: The arcade version used an analogue joystick, which was unique for its time, but the Master System relies on its standard digital D-pad.
  • Performance: The gameplay on the Master System is slower and more sluggish compared to the speedy, colourful, and smooth arcade version.
