Description

Sony Minidisc Player MZ-1

The Sony MiniDisc Player MZ-1 was the first portable MiniDisc recorder, released by Sony in 1992. It is a significant device in audio history, known for introducing the MiniDisc format and the concept of compressed digital sound recording to consumers. Today, the MZ-1 is considered a collector’s item and is primarily available on resale sites like eBay.
Key features
  • First of its kind: The MZ-1 debuted the MiniDisc format with a focus on portability and convenience.
  • Recording versatility: It featured multiple inputs, allowing for both digital (optical cable) and analogue (line-in and mic-in) recordings. This enabled users to create digital copies from external sources.
  • Digital editing: It offered advanced-for-the-time editing features, allowing tracks to be divided, combined, and deleted. A small keyboard was included to title tracks.
  • ATRAC audio compression: The MZ-1 utilized Sony’s proprietary ATRAC (Adaptive Transform Acoustic Coding) codec to compress audio, which allowed for digital sound on the small disc.
  • Slot-loading mechanism: Unlike later, smaller models, the
MZ-1 used a powered, slot-loading mechanism for discs, similar to a VCR.
Limitations and modern considerations Because the MZ-1 is an early, vintage piece of technology, there are several drawbacks to be aware of: Poor battery life: One of the
MZ-1‘s biggest weaknesses was its low battery life, which was only about two hours in playback mode. Modern-day alternatives for the obsolete original BP-MZ1 rechargeable battery are often required, such as USB-C rechargeable battery kits or 3D-printed battery cases.
  • Bulky design: Compared to later MiniDisc players, the
MZ-1 is a sizable and heavy device, which made it more of a “transportable” player rather than a truly pocket-sized one.
  • Mechanical noise: The internal mechanism is fairly noisy during playback.
  • No PC connectivity: The device was released before computer compatibility was a standard feature for portable audio. Audio transfer was limited to analogue or optical connections.
  • Limited availability: You cannot buy a new MZ-1 from a retailer, and finding one in working condition can be a challenge. Replacement parts, especially the original rechargeable battery, are likely unavailable.
