Description

Rocky Balboa PSP

Rocky Balboa is a 2007 boxing video game for the PlayStation Portable (PSP) based on the movie of the same name. While it was released to tie in with the movie, much of its gameplay is a rehash of the franchise’s prior console titles, Rocky (2002) and Rocky Legends (2004).
Gameplay and features
  • Story Mode: The story mode follows the plot of the film and culminates in the final bout against heavyweight champion Mason “The Line” Dixon. To defeat the champ, the player must relive Rocky’s historic matches through flashbacks to gradually regain his skills.
  • Historic Fights: The game features flashback fights pulled from across all the Rocky films. You’ll face off against iconic opponents like Apollo Creed, Clubber Lang, and Ivan Drago in their original movie arenas.
  • Authentic Feel: The game uses cinematic camera angles and includes actual film footage to immerse the player in the drama of the story.
  • Exhibition Mode: This mode lets you create “what-if” matches between any of the boxers in the game. You can pit any two characters from the franchise against each other, in any arena.
  • Multiplayer: The game also supports local multiplayer, allowing you to challenge a friend to a match.
  • “Torso Control”: The gameplay is designed to emulate the “true Rocky style” of boxing, focusing more on dramatic slugfests and big comeback punches rather than realistic simulation. The game’s control scheme for the PSP allows a decent amount of control over Rocky’s movements.
Legacy and reviews
Rocky Balboa was the last video game released by MGM Interactive before the company became defunct in 2007. At the time of its release, reviews from gaming publications like Eurogamer noted that much of the content was reused from previous games, though it was still considered a solid tie-in game.
Some players, including those on Reddit, have praised the game’s ambition for a PSP title, particularly its graphics and the use of cinematic elements. However, some have also criticized the control scheme for having input lag.
