Description
Joust Atari 7800
Joust for the Atari 7800 is an arcade port of the 1982 game by Williams Electronics. It was one of the launch titles for the Atari 7800 ProSystem in 1986 and is regarded as one of the console’s best games and most accurate arcade conversions. In the game, you play as a knight riding a flying ostrich, using a lance to defeat enemies on buzzards.
Gameplay features
- Arcade-faithful action: The Atari 7800 port successfully replicates the fast-paced, classic jousting gameplay of the original arcade version with very little slowdown. You defeat enemy knights by strategically clashing with them at a higher altitude to knock them off their steeds.
- Multiplayer: The game supports two-player cooperative and competitive modes, allowing you to work with or against a friend. In two-player competitive mode, you can earn a bonus for being the first to knock the other player off their ride.
- Waves of enemies: You face increasingly difficult waves of enemy riders. After you defeat a rider, their bird flies away and they turn into an egg. You must collect the egg for extra points before it hatches into a tougher foe.
- Pterodactyl: In addition to the enemy knights, a deadly pterodactyl will periodically appear to attack you.
Comparison to other versions
- Enhanced graphics and sound: The Atari 7800 version features improved graphics and smoother gameplay compared to the earlier Atari 2600 port. The sound effects on the
7800 are also a step up, with reviewers noting they resemble the arcade original.
- Accurate port: The 7800 version is praised for being a very accurate port of the original arcade game, staying true to its core gameplay. Some reviewers consider it the best port available on 8-bit systems.
- No “auto-flap” feature: Unlike the NES port, the Atari 7800 version does not have an “auto-flap” button, so players must repeatedly press the button to fly.
