Days Of Thunder Amiga

Days of Thunder

on the Commodore Amiga is a 1990 NASCAR racing simulation video game loosely based on the film of the same name. Developed by Creative Materials and published by Mindscape, the game has been noted for its attempts at realism for the era, but also criticized for its slow, choppy graphics.

Gameplay and Features
Days of Thunder attempts to simulate the experience of NASCAR racing with several detailed elements:
  • Racing on Ovals: The game features 8 tracks based on real-life counterparts, all of which are oval in nature but vary in length, corner types, and gradients.
  • Qualifying and Championships: Players can participate in qualifying rounds to achieve a good starting position. Progress requires finishing in the top three of each race to advance to the next track.
  • Pit Stops: A notable feature is the manual control of the five-member pit crew during stops. Losing time in the pit stop can cost positions in the race, though rival drivers never pit.
  • Multiple Perspectives: The game offers various camera angles, including side views, top-down, and a view from the rear window.
  • Multiplayer: A two-player option was available via a null-modem connection.
Reception and Technical Aspects
The Amiga version of the game received mixed to negative reviews, primarily due to performance issues.
  • Graphics and Speed: Reviewers often criticized the game’s use of slow vector graphics, which made the high-speed racing feel sluggish and jerky, even at reduced detail settings.
  • Controls: The joystick controls were also considered difficult, making it hard to keep the car on the track.
