Description
Dalek Attack Amiga
Dalek Attack is a 1992 platform and shooter video game for the Commodore Amiga and other systems, based on the British sci-fi series Doctor Who. The game allows players to assume the role of one of three classic Doctors as they battle the Daleks and other enemies.
Gameplay and mechanics
- Playable characters: You can choose to play as the Second Doctor (Patrick Troughton), Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker), or Seventh Doctor (Sylvester McCoy). Each Doctor can be paired with an assistant like Ace, a UNIT soldier, or K9, though the final version of the game dropped K9 as a companion.
- Mission: The objective is to defeat the Daleks across different eras and locations, such as London, Tokyo, and their home planet Skaro.
- Level types: The game begins with a shoot-’em-up level where the Doctor flies an anti-gravity disc through the sewers, before transitioning to a more traditional platforming and shooting format for the rest of the game.
- Combat: The Doctor is armed with a laser gun (described in-game as a modified sonic screwdriver) to destroy enemies like Daleks and Ogrons.
Reception and legacy
- Licensing issues: The game was originally advertised under the Admiral Software label but was later recalled and reissued by Alternative Software due to a conflict with another company. Boxes for the initial release had stickers placed over the original logo.
- Mixed reviews: Contemporary reviews were mixed. Some critics praised the game’s use of the Doctor Who license, particularly the variety of Dalek types and the addition of a two-player mode. Other reviewers were critical of the gameplay, finding it repetitive and predictable, and pointed out graphical shortcomings.
- Collector’s item: As a retro game, Dalek Attack remains a notable item for collectors of Amiga software and Doctor Who memorabilia.
