Description
Batman The Movie Amiga
Batman: The Movie, also known simply as Batman, is an action video game developed and published by Ocean Software. Based on the 1989 film directed by Tim Burton, the Amiga version was released in 1989 and was famously bundled with the Commodore Amiga 500 computer. The game features five different levels, with gameplay that shifts dramatically between different styles.
Gameplay variety
The Amiga version of the game was notable for its variety, combining different styles of gameplay across its five levels.
- Platforming: In levels 1 and 5, you control Batman in a side-scrolling platform adventure. Armed with batarangs and a bat-rope, you must navigate obstacles and fight the Joker’s henchmen in the Axis Chemical Plant and Gotham Cathedral.
- Driving: Level 2 puts you in the Batmobile, racing through the streets of Gotham in a 3D-style driving sequence. You must avoid obstacles, police roadblocks, and the Joker’s thugs.
- Puzzle: Level 3 is a puzzle sequence inside the Batcave. You must use the Batcomputer to identify which household products have been contaminated with the Joker’s chemical weapon, Smilex.
- Flying: In level 4, you pilot the Batwing and must fly down the parade route to cut the ropes on giant balloons filled with poison gas.
Reviews and legacy
Upon its release, the Amiga version was well-received by reviewers, who often praised the game’s sound design and the variety of its gameplay.
- The music and sound effects were a standout feature, creating an energetic and atmospheric mood despite not being based on Danny Elfman’s film score.
- The 3D driving and flying sequences were particularly lauded for their smooth graphics and speed, making them a standout for the Amiga platform.
- Some reviewers felt the platforming sections looked dated and “8-bit” in style, with Batman’s character sprite appearing a bit chunky.
- Despite some critiques, the game was considered a very strong movie tie-in, an achievement for a company like Ocean, which had a mixed track record with film licenses.
- The game was a commercial success, especially as part of the Commodore Amiga “Batman Pack” bundle, which helped make it one of the most successful Amiga bundles ever sold.
Another great Amiga game – Stargoose (Amiga)
