Description
Slap Shot Master System
Slap Shot is an arcade-style ice hockey game for the Sega Master System, released in 1990, known for its accessible controls and fun two-player mode.
Gameplay Features
- Arcade-Style Action: The game focuses on fast-paced action with quick passes and sharp shots, rather than a deep simulation.
- Perspective Shifts: General gameplay is displayed on a horizontal, side-scrolling rink, but the perspective shifts to a close-up, 3D one-on-one view when a player takes a shot on goal.
- Controls: The game features intuitive passing and shooting controls. On defence, you control your on-ice player and simultaneously a separate control for the goalie, which can be challenging to manage but adds a dynamic to two-player matches.
- Fights and Penalties: Fights can randomly occur after checks, which are resolved through a button-mashing sequence. The loser serves a two-minute penalty, leaving their team shorthanded.
- Game Modes:
- Exhibition: A single match for one or two players.
- Tournament: A single-player mode where you play a series of games against randomly selected teams, with elimination after a loss.
- Teams and Leagues: There are 24 international teams divided into three leagues (A, B, and C) based on skill level, and you can only play against teams within the same league.
- Replay Value: Reviewers note that while the single-player experience is limited, the two-player mode offers high replay value and is a “great laugh”.
