On Cue ZX Spectrum

On Cue is a billiards simulation game released for the ZX Spectrum in 1985. Published by Mastertronic and developed by Added Dimension, it features both 8-Ball Pool and Snooker. It was a budget-priced title, costing just £2.99 at the time of its release. 
Gameplay features
  • Gameplay modes: You can play against the computer at three different skill levels—Novice, Average, and Expert—or challenge another human player. The multiplayer mode is generally considered the more enjoyable option.
  • Top-down perspective: The entire table is shown on the screen from a top-down perspective, allowing a full view of the balls’ positions.
  • Controls and mechanics:
    • To take a shot, you first use a cursor to position where you want the cue ball to go.
    • After the initial press, you can adjust the spin on the ball.
    • A power bar then appears, which you use to set the power of your shot.
  • Table editor: The game includes a customisable feature that lets you edit the table layout. This allows for practice sessions or setting up trick shots.
  • Graphics and sound:
    • The graphics feature “colour clash,” a common limitation on the ZX Spectrum, especially when multiple objects collide.
    • The game has only sound effects, with no background music. It uses different beeps for hitting balls, colliding with cushions, and potting balls. 
Critical reception
On Cue was noted for being a functional simulation that stayed true to the rules of pool and snooker. However, the single-player experience against the computer was criticised for its slow pace, with the AI taking a long time to play its shots. Most reviews suggested that the game is best enjoyed in two-player mode, for those who have the patience for a more deliberate simulation.
