Description

Moon Patrol Atari 2600

is an Atari 2600 game released in 1983, based on the 1982 arcade title from developer Irem and publisher Williams Electronics. The Atari 2600 version was published by Atari, Inc.. A side-scrolling shooter, it is considered one of the better arcade ports for the system.

Gameplay details
The game puts you in control of a perpetually-moving moon buggy, which you navigate across a challenging lunar landscape.
  • Controls: You use the Atari joystick to control your speed and jump.
    • Move right to accelerate.
    • Move left to slow down.
    • Push up or use the fire button to jump over obstacles and fire simultaneously.
  • Hazards and enemies: You must avoid or destroy various dangers to survive.
    • Ground obstacles: These include rocks, landmines, and craters.
    • Aerial enemies: UFOs and “alien tanks” attack from above, dropping missiles and other projectiles. Some missiles create new craters on the ground.
  • Objective: The goal is to survive the two courses, each with 26 checkpoints, and earn points for destroying obstacles and completing levels quickly.
  • Difficulty: Three difficulty settings are available, and a two-player, alternating mode is also included.
Atari 2600 vs. arcade version
While the Atari 2600 version is a respectable port, it features some differences from the arcade original.

Another great retro game available at Escapist Gamer – Crystal Castles (Atari 2600)
