Description

Wizard Of Wor Atari 2600

Wizard of Wor is a maze-based shooter released for the Atari 2600 in 1982 by CBS Electronics, based on the 1981 arcade game by Midway. Players control a “Worrior” to navigate dungeons, defeat monsters, and ultimately face the Wizard of Wor. The game is also known for its unique co-op or competitive multiplayer mode.
Gameplay overview
The game’s objective is to clear each maze-like dungeon by shooting all the monsters, known as “Worlings”. A radar at the bottom of the screen helps track enemies, some of which can turn invisible. After clearing the initial monsters, a winged beast called the Worluk appears, and killing it triggers a double-point dungeon. Eventually, the Wizard of Wor himself will appear, teleporting around the dungeon and firing lightning bolts.
Worling species
  • Burwors: Blue, wolf-like creatures that appear at the start of each dungeon.
  • Garwors: Yellow, T-Rex-like creatures that can become invisible.
  • Thorwors: Red, fast, and tricky scorpion-like creatures that can also turn invisible.
Multiplayer modes
  • Cooperative: In two-player mode, you can team up with another player to take down the monsters.
  • Competitive: You also have the option to shoot and eliminate the other player, scoring additional points.
Gameplay tips
  • Use the radar: Rely on the radar scanner at the bottom of the screen to track invisible Garwors and Thorwors.
  • Fire strategically: Since you can only have one laser shot on the screen at a time, use shorter, more calculated shots in narrow corridors. Firing long-distance shots will leave you vulnerable.
  • Get bumped: You can position your Worrior partially in a hallway to get bumped back by an approaching enemy, which gives you time to fire and kill them.
  • Wait to enter: If the dungeon entrance is swarming with enemies, you have up to 20 seconds at the start of a dungeon to re-enter. Use this time to wait for a safer moment.
  • Defensive play: In the early levels, find good defensive positions in maze layouts where you can stand partially out of a hallway and fire rapidly
