Description

Shooting Gallery Master System

Shooting Gallery is a 1987 light gun shooter game for the Sega Master System, requiring the use of the Light Phaser accessory. It was one of the early light gun games released for the console.
Gameplay and features
  • Action In Shooting Gallery, you take aim at various targets in different carnival-style shooting scenarios. The game includes 24 levels featuring different themes, such as ducks, balloons, and spaceships.
  • Progression To move to the next level, you must hit a minimum number of targets. Missing a shot will delay your next one, and a streak of successful shots allows for faster firing.
  • Difficulty The game is known for its unforgiving difficulty and lack of continues. If you fail to meet the required number of hits in any round, the game ends, and you must start over from the beginning. This makes reaching the later, more difficult levels a significant challenge.
  • Visuals Reviewers often praise the game’s bright and cartoon-like graphics, which are fitting for the target-shooting theme. A unique visual detail is that missed shots can “chip” the background, revealing a brick texture beneath the level’s scenery.
  • Controls The game is praised for the accuracy of the Light Phaser, which for a game without calibration, works very well. Reviewers note you can aim close to the physical edge of the screen.
The Sega Light Phaser
  • The Light Phaser is the Master System’s light gun accessory, similar to Nintendo’s Zapper for the NES.
  • It is required to play Shooting Gallery and other compatible games like Marksman Shooting and Gangster Town.
  • The accessory works by detecting light from a CRT television screen. The sensor in the gun’s tip identifies a flash of light at the moment a target appears, which tells the console that a hit has occurred.
  • Like all light guns of its era, the Light Phaser is not compatible with modern televisions, such as LCD or LED screens.
